Dr Chandana Unnithan is a recognised Digital Health and informatics expert from Australia; and a reputed academic (Professor), known for experiential approaches, with expertise in health systems design, implementation and evaluation. Her current work is in public health informatics, integrating novel technologies (IoT, blockchain) with civic engagement in building smart healthier communities. For this purpose, she brings together citizens, health care institutions, technology partners, and city councils to work together successfully, over a decade.
Dr. Chandana became an active participant in the AT6FUI initiatives with research activities in the framework of 'living labs'. She began collaborations with Dr. Ajit Babu (St Louis University, USA) and Dr. Engelbert Niehaus (Germany) for developing Early Warning and Adaptive Response systems involving GIS, Remote Sensing, mobile applications and social media. The projects are aimed at utilisation of geo-spatial technologies in improving public health, assesses health risk and leverages health analytics innovations. In 2019, she became a delegate representing Australia, in the Scientific and Technical Committee which reports to the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), UN Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). She has also been appointed to the WHO Digital Health group of experts.
She partners with colleagues in Canada, Germany and USA in her research. With a portfolio of nearly 100 research publications, she is on multiple International conference committees (as invited speaker, advisory and panel member) based in Canada and Australia as well as editorial boards of several international journals and books. Apart from these main stream research activities, she has a special interest in empowerment of women in ICT. She is an IoT panel as an expert on the Grace Hopper Women in Computing Series. She is the global advisor for Bridge-for-Health Cooperative based in Canada and a member of Canada Public Health Association.
Apart from her academic and career engagements, Chandana is an award winning dancer with the Shiamak group (the largest Bollywood academy in the world) that promotes good health and joy through dance, through thematic performances (Have Spirit, Will Triumph; Dance for good, etc). She has participated in Commonwealth Games 2006 in Melbourne, and have been recognised by the 'Spirit of Dance' award in 2017. She has co-written a script for a bollywood musical, ‘Rhythm of the Revolution’, as part of Jhankar series of multicultural events in Melbourne, Australia. She is also an active participant/donor for restoration of Capitol Theatre, a landmark in Melbourne, Australia.
